The fact a book is needed to use a text editor just might explain why so many won't touch it.
It's really a philosophical issue: Should computers accommodate humans or should humans accommodate computers? Do you program the computer or does the computer program you?
Vim is an example of the latter. And if you truly subscribe to this (for "power" and "efficiency" or maybe "tradition"), shouldn't you be writing CPU opcodes instead of using a language compiler? And GUIs and AI should be right out.
