Destruction of underground utilities in Texas has gotten so bad they're starting to implement automated, scifi-tier sensor technologies that leverage fiber optics.
> Texas811, the nonprofit organization that manages the state's "call before you dig" system, today announced the launch of Texas811 Guardian. The innovative technology uses distributed fiber-optic sensing to turn existing fiber-optic lines into real-time monitoring systems that detect excavation activity, preventing damage before it occurs.
> The sensitivity and speed of Rayleigh-based sensing allows distributed monitoring of acoustic signals over distances of more than 100 km from each laser source.
This took me a awhile to figure out what I was actually looking at. Thought it was some sort of real rodeo. Then I thought it was some sort of convention for car repo companies. Finally, it's a conference for those who work in the utility locating business, as in, those who survey and mark buried water, gas, electricity, and telecom lines before any sort of digging takes place.
Non-destructive location of utilities is a lot more valuable than you might think. In places like intersection there’s just so much going on and any improvements require accommodating, underground, utilities that have been around for many years, including things that would just not occur to a normal person like pipes made of wood that are from the early part of the last century. It’s pretty amazing how far subsurface utility engineering has come.

Actually, sounds like total fun.
If they added studfinding into this and it would be more like divining rods and witchcraft.
(tried countless studfinders and wish there was one that gave a clear wall picture)
Wow, surprised to see that this is near me. Seems more interesting than a regular rodeo.
